The BK 29 Hockey teams have been skating for 16 seasons in memory of Bill Kaminska who died from Colon Cancer March 29, 2003. Bill was one of the top goaltenders in WNY that played for the Buffalo Shamrocks, Tonawanda All Stars, Buffalo Blades, UB, and various minor league teams. Bill was invited to the Eastern tryout for the 1980 USA Olympic team where he was one of 90 goaltenders and made it to the final six. After retiring, Bill played goal on a regular basis with the Sabres Alumni. The BK29 skate is made up of players that played with Bill throughout the years and those who did not play with him know of him now. Two of our players are cancer survivors: Tom Frizzell and Ray Miller. Kevin Weber lost his wife Margie a few years ago. Steve and Tim Roder lost their father in 1990. Mike and Tom Kaminska, Bill's brothers, skate during our season. Another Kaminska brother, Jack, is currently battling the disease.
We played in 2018, raising over to $29,000, and plan to meet and then exceed this number in 2019! This BK29 Group kicks cancer in the teeth!
This summer, more than 2,500 pairs of skates will hit the ice to play in the 2019 11 Day Power Play Community Shift to help in the fight against cancer! The 11-day game will be played in continuous shifts at Harborcenter in Buffalo, NY. This important event supports The 11 Day Power Play, raising critically-needed funds for cancer research and wellness programs at Roswell Park, Camp Good Days and Make-A-Wish WNY. While it is physically challenging to play in a marathon hockey game, it's a walk in the park compared to what most endure in their battle against cancer. Cancer is a disease that touches everyone, and The 11 Day Power Play wants to make an impact in our community. In the past two years, The 11 Day Power Play has raised nearly $2.5 million supporting cancer causes in Western New York.
